History of trailers

Film trailers have improved over the last 40 years they have advanced massivly by the ammount of edits an camera shots and the mise en scene used in each trailer to create tension to the viewer. Below will be three film trailers from different eras, such as 1960s, 1980s and the 1990s and i will analyse each one and then compare how they have changed over the years.

                                                          Bronco bullfrog trailer-1960s

This is the eailiest trailer that i will be looking at, thorughout this film there are no stand out edits or camera shots, this is due to the lack of technology avalible to them aswell as funds to produce the film. There are several medium long shots and close ups however they are placed onto a tripod to keep the camera still this is proberly due to the weight of the cameras in this era however they have used the pan shot as this would be easy to do on the tripod. they have used medium long shots to show the ammount of people in the scence also to show what is going on over all in the clip. the clips within the trailer are very prelonged and shows alot of the scene, this can be a negative as it shows alot of one scene revealing alot of infomation. the use of there jump cuts flip over to another longer scence there are only a few scenes that are short and then shortly swap to another. the biggest thing that i can locate is that colour and the background scenery, the black and white real puts a date on the trailer giving us a indication on when this was releaced and the era of the making, the background items and mise en scene show the date also they are very old vehicals aswell as the wooden trains so it gives a date to the film.

                                                        Superman 3 trailer- 1983

This trailer is noticably more advanced in all aspects such as viewing qualilty, sounds and effects. this trailer is much long spaning to over 3 minutes long, to show parts of the film they have incoprated jump cuts, fades in and out, zoom out zoom in and time elipsis, the advantage of these being used is that they can create alot of tension and and creates a effective mood throughout the film making the viewer want to look on and see how there childhood hero can help them. the use of sound in the background helps make this a huge succsess as to start and for the majorty of the trailer is the superman theme tune this will encourage the audiance and send shivers down there back knowing that there hero is being invloved in what it in the film. we see the star and his enemys early on in the trailer so that it gets the point across of that there will be some sort of conflict and battle and we will as a audiance want to see who has won this battle.  thye use of colour of the enemys and super man himself help us identify who is the main caracters as super man is clearly noticable in the blue and red cape and pants, this has been done by the use of cgi.

                                                                Taken film trailer- 2009

We can see early on the use of text in the trailer is to play a huge part, the way that the facts and figures are so high means that we can tell that is will be a big film with a big story line however it shows that it is also realistic to what is actually going on in the world today however the use of jump cuts and fade ins and outs help show us about what the film is about and showsing alot of action scenes to know there is trouble in the story. The use of text helps as it doesnt give much away about the film and there is very little motion picture in this so the producer is highly dependent on the text to get the point across and grab attention of the audiance and hope that it draws in the audiance.

We can see the comparrason between the three trailers and how modern teachnology has evolved and advanced and what the producers and directors have avalible to them to help produce the blockbusting film with the audiance grabbing trailer, we can notice the colour difference immediately between the three going from the starting black and white to the final CGI finish on the taken trailer this clearly will draw in the audiance so that they can experiance the best effects and sound. Also from the first going to the last the use of text has become more prodominant throughout this means that the producer doesnt have to give away to much footage to draw in the audiance they can use text to grab the attention of the audiance this creates a massive impact and it is common in all todays trailers.
